Lam Ngoc Tran, a 65-year-old man from Cypress, Texas, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the brutal murder of his wife, My Thai Dang.

According to Houston’s Fox 26, Tran admitted to bludgeoning Dang to death with a nail gun in their Cypress home in January 2022. The sentencing comes after Tran pleaded guilty earlier this year, allowing a judge to determine his punishment following a pre-sentence investigation.

In the Fox 26 article, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg emphasized the reality of domestic violence, stating that the most dangerous time for a victim is when they are trying to escape an abusive relationship. Just one day after the murder, Dang had a protective order hearing scheduled against her husband.

According to Fox 26, Assistant District Attorney Matthew Magill revealed that Dang, an immigrant from Vietnam, who had settled in Minnesota before marrying Tran in Houston, had endured years of domestic violence in her marriage, leading to the scheduled hearing for a protective order.

When Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call at the couple’s home, Houston’s KPRC 2 stated, they discovered Dang lying in a pool of blood. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and the cause of death was determined to be the result of being beaten to death with a heavy pneumatic nail gun, the KPRC article said. Tran allegedly attempted to take his own life by shooting himself with the same nail gun, but he survived and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
