PASADENA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT: A Message From Superintendent Dr. Deeann Powell

Schoolnews

Pasadena Independent School District issued the following announcement on July 28.

I hope you and your family continue to be healthy and safe. As we work on our plans for re-opening schools, we continue to seek guidance regarding face-to-face instruction with the recent rise in cases across our community, cities and state. Thank you for the 31,000+ responses to our Back-to-School survey. Over 65% of parents asked for virtual learning for at least the start of the school year and we are working hard to be able to roll out the best possible learning platform for all students PK-12.

I want to provide you an update on a few items of importance:

There has been extensive discussion and collaboration about how to best proceed with instructional delivery once school officially starts August 18th. Due to the continual rise in transmission of COVID across our community, we have determined the best course of action at this time is to provide all instruction virtually until September 8th when our buildings will open for those choosing to learn in a face-to-face environment with their peers. Our hope is that in the additional time away from our buildings that we will help our communities flatten the curve prior to allowing students to return to campus. After September 8th, any family who chose virtual learning will continue to do so until they feel comfortable sending their child to their assigned campus for face-to-face learning. We realize this delay in offering face-to-face instruction will place a burden on some of our families who will need to arrange supervision of their children while they work.

With the additional three weeks of required virtual learning, principals, teachers and staff will have extra time to prepare classrooms, safety protocols and building procedures. It will also provide teachers the time they need to establish learning routines for all students to become accustomed to the virtual curriculum in the event that we are required to return to a virtual setting at any point during the school year. Teachers will provide virtual instruction during the school day following an established schedule similar to the one that will be followed once face-to-face school resumes.

Please know these decisions are made with much deliberation and consultation with our Board of Trustees and local and state guidance, which continues to evolve. Safety has, and will continue to be, the top priority and will guide all decisions we make as a district. We appreciate your continued support, patience and understanding as we continue to navigate this pandemic together.

Your feedback is wanted and appreciated and will help inform us in updating our Back-to-School guide and post answers to Frequently Asked Questions. Please email BackToSchool2020@pasadenaisd.org with any questions you may have for us to address. Thank you to those who have completed the on-line registration for returning students. If you have not had the chance to do so, the link will be re-opened no later than August 1, 2020 for all returning and new students. New students will be contacted once the on-line registration is completed for an on-campus appointment.

My thoughts and prayers continue to remain with each of you during this time.
